Czech Republic were denied a winning start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign after South Africa fought back to earn a 1-1 draw through a late penalty in an entertaining Group A encounter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.
Despite taking an early lead and controlling key moments of the match, the European side were left frustrated as Teboho Mokoena’s composed spot-kick in the closing stages rescued a valuable point for Bafana Bafana.
Head coach Miroslav Koubek made several notable changes to his starting XI, leaving experienced midfield duo Tomáš Souček and Pavel Šulc on the bench. Their places were filled by Lukáš Červ and veteran Vladimír Darida, who added fresh energy in midfield.
The Czech Republic wasted little time asserting themselves and nearly opened the scoring inside the opening minute when Patrik Schick met a high cross with a close-range header, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably dealt with.
Their breakthrough arrived in the sixth minute following an excellent attacking move down the right flank. Adam Hložek cut the ball back intelligently for Ladislav Krejčí, whose clever touch found Michal Sadílek inside the penalty area. The midfielder kept his composure to slot past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, handing the Czechs a deserved 1-0 lead.
After a sluggish opening, South Africa gradually settled into the contest and began to dominate possession. However, Hugo Broos’ side struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined Czech defensive unit, while their own backline looked vulnerable whenever placed under pressure.
Bafana Bafana came closest just before halftime when goalkeeper Matěj Kovář spilled a cross into a crowded penalty area. The loose ball eventually fell to Maseko, whose effort was heroically blocked by Krejčí to preserve the Czech lead heading into the break.
The second half began much like the first, with the Czech Republic immediately threatening to double their advantage.
Sadílek was again heavily involved, leading a swift counterattack before setting up Darida inside the area, but the midfielder failed to make clean contact under pressure. Moments later, Červ unleashed a powerful long-range effort that forced Williams into an excellent save.
Although South Africa continued to enjoy more possession, the Czech Republic looked the more dangerous side whenever they attacked.
The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages. A long-range strike from Maseko struck the arm of substitute Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area after the midfielder attempted to block the shot. Following the incident, the referee pointed immediately to the spot.
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped up with confidence, sending Kovář the wrong way to calmly convert the penalty and level the score at 1-1, ensuring both teams shared the points.
While the Czech Republic will feel disappointed after letting victory slip away, the performance offered plenty of positives, particularly their sharp attacking transitions and disciplined defensive display for much of the contest.
South Africa, meanwhile, showed resilience to recover after a difficult start and earned a potentially crucial point that keeps their qualification hopes alive.
With Group A still wide open, both nations now turn their attention to Matchday Two, where every point could prove decisive in the race for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.
