Sabah FC emerged victory in the first match after beating Putrajaya Athletic FC, a club from Liga A1 Semi-pro scoring 4-0 in the Unifi Piala Malaysia 2024/25 Round of 16 frist leg at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
In what was head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee’s final campaign with the team, Sabah showcased their strength despite making several changes to the starting lineup.
The Rhinos set the tone early, with winger Saddil Ramdani opening the scoring in the 13th minute. His precise shot left PT Athletic goalkeeper Nik Amin helpless.
Sabah extended their lead just six minutes later when a powerful strike from outside the box, courtesy of Daniel Hakim Draman, doubled their advantage. The visitors comfortably ended the first half with a 2-0 lead.
Despite PT Athletic’s attempts to rally in the second half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against Sabah’s disciplined defense. The best opportunity for the hosts came through Indra Putra’s header, but substitute goalkeeper Ramzi Mustakim comfortably saved it.
Sabah added their third goal in the 76th minute, thanks to a stunning long-range effort from defender Daniel Ting, leaving PT Athletic with no answers.
In stoppage time, a miscalculation by Yusri resulted in an own goal, sealing a comprehensive 4-0 victory for Sabah.
With a four-goal advantage, Sabah is in a commanding position ahead of the second leg, which will also be played at the KLFA Stadium on November 27.
This emphatic win is a fitting send-off for Datuk Ong Kim Swee, who recently announced his decision to step down at the end of November. Under his leadership, Sabah has consistently performed well in domestic and regional competitions, and the team looks poised to advance to the quarter-finals.
