Malaysia’s top women’s singles shuttler, Goh Jin Wei, saw her dream run at the PRINCESS SIRIVANNAVARI Thailand Masters 2026 end in a medical retirement during the final at Nimibutr Stadium, Bangkok.
Facing off against India’s rising star Devika Sihag, Jin Wei was making her highly-anticipated debut in a World Tour series final. The Malaysian ace had reached the summit clash after an exhausting but brilliant semi-final victory over compatriot Wong Ling Ching, but the physical toll of the tournament ultimately proved too heavy to bear.
The opening game saw a visible dip in Jin Wei’s usual explosive movement. Struggling with fatigue and a mounting count of unforced errors following a week of grueling matches, the Malaysian couldn’t find her rhythm. Sihag took full advantage of the situation, dominating the court to take the first set comfortably at 8-21.
Refusing to go down without a fight, Jin Wei returned for the second game. She managed to capitalize on a few nervous errors from the young Indian shuttler to keep the score respectable. However, while trailing 3-6, the discomfort became unbearable. After a brief consultation, Jin Wei made the difficult decision to retire from the match due to injury, handing the title to Sihag.
While the retirement is a setback, the tournament remains a massive net positive for the two-time former World Junior Champion. Her run to the final marks a significant return to form on the world stage.
As the tournament runner-up in this Super 300 event, Jin Wei secures 4,900 BWF World Ranking points, and a prize purse of US$9,500 (approx. RM37,448).
