Kuala Lumpur City has ended hope in the ASEAN Trophy after losing to Buriram United, a club from Thailand scoring 0-1 in the Shopee Cup 2024/25 Group Stage, Group B at Buriram Stadium, Buriram.
KL City started the match strongly and created an early opportunity in the 6th minute when Giancarlo Gallifuoco fired a shot inside the box, but Buriram goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom reacted swiftly to deny the attempt.
Buriram broke the deadlock in the 37th minute through a well-executed attack. Theerathon Bunmathan delivered a precise cross to Lucas Crispim, who slotted the ball into the near post, giving the Thunder Castle a 1-0 lead.
Despite KL City’s efforts to equalize before the break, the score remained unchanged, with Buriram holding their narrow advantage.
Desperate to level the game, KL City pressed aggressively in the second half but struggled to penetrate Buriram’s resolute defense.
In the 54th minute, Pitthawat Sukjitthammakul orchestrated a dangerous move, setting up Rattanakorn Maikami for a long-range strike that narrowly missed the target.
Guillerme Bissoli had two golden chances in the 63rd and 65th minutes but failed to capitalize, as KL City’s defenders stood firm under pressure.
Buriram continued their relentless attack, with Lucas Crispim delivering a series of dangerous crosses. Narubadin Weerawatnodom’s diving shot in the 71st minute forced an incredible double save by KL City’s goalkeeper Muhammed Hakim, who kept the visitors in the game.
Despite Buriram’s dominance, no further goals were scored, and the match ended 1-0 in favor of the Thunder Castle.
The victory secured Buriram United’s spot in the semi-finals as the second-placed team in Group B with 10 points. They will now face BG Pathum United in a highly anticipated semi-final clash.
