Singapore U22 National Team is hanging by the thinnest of threads. In a result that will send shockwaves through the fraternity were humbled 1-3 by a relentless Timor-Leste in the Men’s Football SEA Games 2025 Group Stage, Group A at Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok.
Despite taking an early lead, a defensive capitulation and a lack of clinical finishing saw Singapore surrender three points to a nation they were expected to beat. The result leaves them needing a near-miracle against heavyweights Thailand to stay in the tournament.
The evening started with promise. After surviving an early scare from an unmarked Anizo Correia, Singapore wrestled control. In the 11th minute, the Young Lions drew first blood.
A brilliant transition saw Jonan Tan find Khairin Nadim, whose initial strike cannoned violently off the post. Fortunately for Singapore, Amir Syafiz was the quickest to react, slamming the rebound home to give the Young Lions a 1-0 lead.
The lead, however, was short-lived. Timor-Leste, led by their electric skipper and Tanjong Pagar United star Zenivio, refused to roll over.
In the 19th Minute, Singapore keeper Aizil Yazid pulled off a save from Tristan Arrarate, but the defence was sleeping on the rebound. Vabio Canavaro pounced to level the scores at 1-1.
After, in the 43rd Minute With Timor-Leste ascending, Anizo Correia found himself with the freedom of the penalty box, coolly slotting home to make it 1-2 just before the break.

The second half saw a desperate Singapore side chasing the game, but luck was not on their side. The Young Lions were denied by the post twice in the second period.
To advance to the semi-finals, Singapore must not only beat the host nation Thailand on Dec 11, but they must do so by a significant goal margin to overturn the deficit. Given Thailand’s form, this is a mountainous task.
