Fifth straight win lifts Red Giants level on points with leaders JDT, as Moraes misses late penalty

Selangor FC took second place in the Malaysia Super League from Kuching City with a 3-1 win over Penang FC at Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Stadium on Saturday night.

It was Selangor’s fifth win in a row. Kim Pan Gon’s side now have 15 points, level with leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), but behind them on goal difference. Kim is the former Malaysia national team coach who took over in January.

The hosts attacked from the start and won two corners in the first five minutes, but could not make them count. Selangor’s best early chance came in the seventh minute, when Chrigor Moraes headed wide from in front of goal, followed by an Eduardo Sosa effort that went wide right.

Moraes opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Penang goalkeeper Ramdhan Hamid saved A Selvan’s header, but the Brazilian was quickest to the rebound. Ramdhan then denied Syahir Bashah in the 22nd minute and a close-range effort from Quentin Cheng two minutes later.

Selangor took only five minutes after the restart to double the lead. Moraes scored again with a shot following a corner.

Stefano Brundo pulled one back for Penang in the 69th minute. A minute later, the visitors were relieved when VAR spared them from conceding a penalty to Selangor.

Moraes was denied a hat-trick late on when his penalty hit the post. Ahmad Zikri Khalili then scored Selangor’s third to close out the match 3-1.

KCFC can regain second place if they beat DPMM FC by at least two goals away on Sunday night. The Cats drew 1-1 with Kitchee in the AFC Champions League Two on Thursday.
