The dream of seeing Malaysia’s doubles pairs reach the final stage of the 2025 Malaysia Open badminton tournament was dashed after all three national representatives suffered defeats in the semi-finals at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, earlier today.
A passionate home crowd filled the arena, cheering fervently for their players, but it was not enough to carry Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun into the finals.
The first to take the court, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, started strong, claiming the opening set 21-17 against Thai duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran. However, they failed to maintain momentum and succumbed to a 12-21, 16-21 loss in the subsequent sets.
Top national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei faced an uphill battle against the formidable world number one duo, Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping. Despite putting up a valiant fight in the first set, narrowly losing 19-21, Tang Jie-Ee Wei faltered in the second, falling 14-21 in what proved to be a decisive defeat.
The final hope for Malaysia, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, ranked 14th in the world, faced Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi of China. The pair delivered an intense 77-minute battle, narrowly taking the first set 26-24 but ultimately losing 21-16, 21-15 in the next two sets.
The losses mark a bittersweet end to Malaysia’s campaign at the prestigious Super 1000 tournament. However, all eyes now turn to the Indian Open, a Super 750 competition set to commence in New Delhi next Tuesday.
