Pau Marti Vicente, head coach of Malaysia national team, acknowledged his team’s formidable challenge as they prepare to take on defending champions Thailand in the third match of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 this Saturday.
In a press conference at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Pau Marti highlighted the difficulties confronting his squad, including injuries, a congested match schedule, and the physical and mental strain on players.
“If I knew all the answers, this wouldn’t have happened,” Pau Marti remarked regarding recent injuries. “We’ve discussed the approach and intensity we need, but sometimes things don’t go our way. Injuries can happen when players aren’t fully focused.”
He confirmed that three players are in doubt for the crucial match due to injuries sustained in their previous outing. The situation has been compounded by players having to balance commitments to both the national team and their respective clubs.
Pau Marti emphasized the importance of prioritizing recovery ahead of the Thailand clash. He revealed that several players have been under immense strain, having played four matches in just 12 days.
“Every match is different, and now is not the time to compare past performances,” he said. “What is important is the mental and physical recovery of the players. We need to prepare them as best as possible.”
Despite the challenges, Pau Marti remains optimistic about his squad’s chances. He urged all stakeholders to rally behind the national team during this critical period.
“The national team should be in the best possible condition, with full support from all parties,” he asserted. “All players in this squad are important, and as a team, we need to continue moving forward.”
Malaysia currently sits atop Group A with four points from two matches, following a 2-2 draw against Cambodia and a 3-2 victory over Timor-Leste. However, the clash against Thailand will be pivotal in determining their progress in the tournament.
Thailand, the defending champions, pose a significant threat, having delivered a commanding 10-0 victory over Timor-Leste in their opening match.
As the team prepares for the showdown in Thailand, Pau Marti’s rallying cry serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and unwavering support from fans, officials, and the wider football community.
