The AFC U17 Asian Cup 2023 has its draw event today in Bangkok, Thailand. The 16 teams were divided into four groups for the June 15 to July 2 tournament, which will see the top four sides seal their places in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru 2023 in November.
Malaysia will be playing against the host nation (Thailand), Yemen and Laos, respectively, in Group A.
Osmera Omaro, head coach of U-17 Malaysia, says they were ready for any possibilities.
“At this stage, every team are equal and strong. But of course, we are playing against Southeast Asia Team, two teams we are quite used to. Hopefully, we can use this opportunity to progress in the competition further.”, said Osmera Omaro.
When asked about playing against Thailand, he expressed that Thailand would be mighty as Thailand is the host nation.
“I think Thailand will be powerful. While Yemen is very impressive in their qualification round, where Yemen has many good players and scored many goals.”
“While Laos, they are very robust, strong, and a well-organised team. But I think the strongest will still be Thailand.”
Asking about how the team prepared, he said, “Yes, we are preparing continuously. A few players are in the National Team. The preparation will be usual.”
Osmera Omaro set the team target to go as further as possible and hopefully get into the final round.
When asked about the opponent’s opinion, he said, “As I said, Thailand as the host nation has a huge advantage; Yemen has a different style as they come from a Middle East country; Laos is a powerful and well-organised team. They always make life difficult for the opponents.”
