Buriram United head coach Osmar Loss believes that controlling possession will be the key to victory when his side takes on Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in their AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 East Zone League Stage opener tomorrow night at Buriram Stadium.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Brazilian tactician highlighted the difference in timing compared to when both sides met last season.
“This is international level, the biggest tournament in Asia. Right now, it’s the start of the season, not like last year when we met JDT in the middle of the campaign. Both teams are still finding their balance. The key point in tomorrow’s game is simple: whoever controls possession the most will score the most goals,” said Osmar.
When asked about Buriram’s experience against another Malaysian side this season, Selangor FC, Osmar stressed that while both teams share some similarities, JDT pose a different kind of challenge.
“Selangor like to play on the counterattack, but JDT focus on dominating possession and have a very strong attack. We’ve studied their strengths, and we must prepare well to close down those areas. I believe tomorrow’s game will be an exciting contest,” he explained.
Buriram striker Kenneth Dougall echoed his coach’s thoughts, stressing the importance of adapting to changes in both squads since their last meetings.
“Tomorrow, our goal is to play our style. If we can keep the ball, we’ll have chances to win. Last year, we met JDT two or three times, but now both teams have changed players. Everyone must adapt. Three points are very important, even though it’s only the first game of the tournament. Ultimately, we know the journey leads to Saudi Arabia, so we must start strong,” said Dougall.
