Mark Milligan has been officially unveiled as the new head coach of Newcastle Jets, signing a contract that runs until the end of the 2026/27 A-League season.
The 39-year-old, who recently served as an assistant coach with the Malaysian national team, departs the Harimau Malaya setup after just two months to take on his first senior head coaching role.
Milligan joined the Malaysia national team in February 2025 under newly appointed head coach Peter Cklamovski, contributing his international experience and tactical insights. However, after being approached by the Jets, he opted to make the career leap, signaling the end of his brief but impactful tenure with the Malaysian squad.
“Mark Milligan brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the role. We’re confident he is the right person to lead the Jets into a new era,” said a Newcastle Jets spokesperson during the official announcement.
Milligan’s move marks a significant transition as he steps into the spotlight of Australian club football management. Known for his leadership as a player—having captained Australia and earned over 80 caps—Milligan is now tasked with reviving a Jets side that underperformed this season.
The Newcastle Jets finished 9th in the 2024/25 A-League, failing to qualify for the Finals Series, prompting a change in direction and leadership at the club.
