Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) claimed a sensational victory at the Qatar Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, outdueling Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) in a heart-pounding battle at Phillip Island.
The eight-time World Champion delivered a masterclass in perseverance and skill, securing his third Grand Prix win of the season. In a critical development for the 2024 MotoGP™ title race, Martin extended his Championship lead to 20 points after beating title rival Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), who finished third.
Despite a slow start caused by a tear-off lodged in his bike’s rear, resulting in wheelspin off the line, Marquez fought his way up the field in stunning fashion. After dropping several places at the start, he wasted no time making up ground, moving into the top five by Lap 5 with an aggressive pass on Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing). The early phase of the race saw Martin convert pole position into a strong lead, while Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) ran second before serving a Long Lap penalty.
The race took a decisive turn when Bezzecchi crashed out on Lap 5, leaving Martin, Bagnaia, and Marquez in a three-way battle for victory. Bagnaia, struggling to match the pace of the leaders, made an attempt to pass Martin on Lap 12, but Martin swiftly reclaimed his lead. This set the stage for a fierce exchange, with Marquez now hot on their heels.
The duel between Marquez and Martin intensified as the race approached its climax. Marquez seized the lead for the first time on Lap 24 with a daring move at Turn 4, but Martin immediately responded with a slipstream-powered counterattack. The two riders went back and forth, exchanging blows on the track in one of the season’s most exhilarating battles. Marquez, refusing to back down, retook the lead on the final lap, holding off Martin’s late surge to cross the finish line 0.997 seconds ahead.
The victory at Phillip Island further cements Marquez’s resurgence this season, with the #93 rider proving he still has the hunger and talent to fight at the highest level.
Bagnaia, who had been locked in a tense championship battle with Martin, could not match the pace of the frontrunners and had to settle for third. The Italian’s 16-point haul keeps him in contention, but Martin’s second-place finish extends his title advantage, adding further pressure on Bagnaia as the season heads into its final stages.
In a battle for fourth, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) delivered a spirited ride, narrowly edging out Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) after a fierce contest. Bastianini, despite a tough qualifying session, charged from 10th on the grid to finish fifth. Franco Morbidelli managed to deny Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) a top-six finish by just 0.016 seconds, with Binder coming home in seventh as the best Pierer Mobility rider.
Elsewhere, Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) grabbed eighth, while Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) secured another solid top-10 finish in ninth. Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), racing in front of his home crowd, finished just ahead of Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) in 11th.
As the title race tightens, all eyes will turn to the Chang International Circuit in Thailand for Round 18 of the season. Martin’s 20-point lead over Bagnaia puts him in a strong position, but with Marquez in top form and Bagnaia determined to fight back, the Thai GP promises to deliver more unforgettable action.
