David Alonso(CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team) clinched a thrilling victory in the Malaysian Moto3 race, marking his sixth consecutive win in the class and extending his remarkable record with 13 wins in the 2024 season.
Alonso’s latest achievement underscores his dominance in Moto3 as he sets new benchmarks in the lightweight category.
The race started with Ivan Ortola seizing the lead from polesitter Adrian Fernandez into Turn 1. David Almansa made an impressive charge from ninth on the grid, swiftly overtaking Ortola to lead the pack. As World Champion Alonso and Dani Holgado pressed forward on the second lap, Holgado’s aggressive pursuit of Ortola led to a highside crash, jeopardizing his standing in the riders’ championship and forcing Alonso to drop to 12th to avoid further incident. Fernandez’s race was also cut short due to engine failure, joining teammate Angel Piqueras on the sidelines.
Joel Kelso briefly took the lead, followed closely by Taiyo Furusato, who charged forward from 16th on the grid. Furusato, the sole Honda contender in the lead group, swapped positions with Kelso multiple times until Alonso surged back to the front. A slight misstep by Furusato in the penultimate corner allowed Alonso to secure the lead with three laps to go, setting up a nail-biting seven-rider shootout in the final stages.
Alonso, battling pressure from Furusato and navigating close calls, managed to hold on and cross the finish line just 0.088 seconds ahead of the Japanese rider, securing a hard-fought victory for the Aspar team. KTM Ajo’s Jose Antonio Rueda surged late in the race to claim third, edging out Ortola and Collin Veijer.
The close finish left Ortola in fourth and Veijer in fifth, with Kelso rounding out the top six. The final points positions were claimed by Ryusei Yamanaka in seventh, Stefano Nepa in eighth, Matteo Bertelle in ninth, and Luca Lunetta in tenth, wrapping up an exhilarating race in Sepang.
