Liga Malaysia season 2024/25 will begin on 3-5 May 2024, until April 2025 following the league’s move align the domestic season to the new Asian Football Confederation (AFC) calendar.
The MFL was forced to make some changes to the previous start date of the Liga Super, which was mid-April 2024, after taking into account several factors, particularly the involvement of Liga Malaysia club players with the national senior squad, the national under-23 squad (B23), the club’s participation in the AFC Cup 2023, pre-season preparations in the month of Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
After the end of the Liga Malaysia season on 17 December 2023, the Harimau Malaya players will report to the central training camp on 26 December 2023 before heading to the 2023 Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar from 12 January 2024 to 10 February 2024.
Following that, on 21 and 26 March 2024, the Harimau Malaya squad will play Oman in the FIFA World Cup 2026/AFC Asian Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers. Changes to the original plans for Liga Malaysia to commence also had to be done by the MFL following the AFC’s announcement regarding the date of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 only being made on 17 May 2023.
In addition, Sabah FC will also continue the Asean Zone AFC Cup semi-final campaign on 13 or 14 February 2024 as well as the involvement of young players from Liga Malaysia clubs with the Malaysia U23 national team Squad in the final round of the AFC U-23 Championship in Doha, Qatar starting on 15 April until 3 May 2024.
With several international assignments at the beginning of this year, particularly involving the Malaysia National Team in main squad and U23 squad, the MFL also takes into account the time constraints of the teams in making preparations ahead of the new 2024/25 league season following the Ramadan celebration from the beginning of March 2024 and the Aidilfitri festival expected in 10 or 11 April 2024.
Therefore, taking into account all these factors, the MFL believes that this date is the appropriate kick off date for the 2024/2025 MFL season.
Furthermore, the Piala MFL will start on 13 May 2024 while the player registration date for the 2024/2025 MFL transfer window will start from 3 February until 26 April 2024.
