Malaysia’s men’s singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao delivered a spectacular performance to secure a place in the Kumamoto Masters final, upsetting world No. 6 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in a thrilling semi-final clash.
Ranked world No. 31, Jun Hao showcased remarkable resilience and determination to overturn a daunting deficit in the deciding game. Trailing 10-17, the Malaysian mounted an extraordinary comeback to seal a 10-21, 21-18, 22-20 victory in a marathon 76-minute encounter.
Jonatan, a seasoned campaigner and the match favorite, started strongly, dominating the first game with precise attacks and rock-solid defense. However, Jun Hao adapted brilliantly in the second game, matching Jonatan’s intensity and forcing errors to level the match.
The final game saw Jonatan surge ahead to a commanding lead, only for Jun Hao to claw his way back with a mix of deft net play and relentless smashes. Under immense pressure, Jun Hao saved two match points before clinching the victory in a nail-biting finish.
This win marks a career milestone for the 25-year-old Malaysian, who has now reached his first-ever Super 500 final. His journey in Kumamoto has been nothing short of inspiring, as he navigated a challenging draw with poise and determination.
Jun Hao will face a formidable opponent in Sunday’s final, as he takes on either Denmark’s two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen or China’s reigning Asian Games champion Li Shi Feng. Regardless of the outcome, Jun Hao’s performance has already solidified his status as a rising star in international badminton.
