Malaysian mixed doubles shuttler Chen Tang Jie showed great accountability and sportsmanship after he and partner Toh Ee Wei fell short in their quest to reach their maiden World Tour Super 1000 final at the 2025 Indonesian Open.
The pair put up a gritty fight but ultimately succumbed to Thailand’s red-hot duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, losing 23-21, 15-21, 11-21 in a 65-minute thriller at Istora Senayan on Saturday.
Speaking after the match, Tang Jie took full responsibility for the loss, admitting that unforced errors in critical moments, especially near the net, made the difference.
“We tried to find a way to attack, but near the net, I made a lot of unnecessary errors,” said Tang Jie in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
“That’s the difference today. The Thai pair performed better than us, but I’m responsible for the defeat too.”
Despite taking a hard-fought first game by staging a late comeback from 17-20 and 20-21 down, the Malaysians were unable to sustain their momentum. Tang Jie admitted that a tactical shift in the second game, influenced by court draughts, backfired and disrupted their rhythm.
“I changed my strategy in the second game as we were playing against the draught, but it didn’t work,” he added.
Partner Toh Ee Wei echoed the disappointment, particularly in failing to capitalize on key moments in the second game.
“We did well to win the first game, but when the second game went point-for-point, we didn’t seize our chances,” said Ee Wei.
This defeat marks the third straight loss to Dechapol-Supissara for Tang Jie-Ee Wei, following earlier exits in the Japan Masters (first round) and Indonesian Masters (quarter-finals). Their only win against the Thai pair came in the Indian Open second round earlier this year.
The Thai duo, who have quickly risen to prominence since partnering last year, are now eyeing their sixth title, having added the Singapore Open to their trophy haul just last week.
