DPR Korea U20 Women’s National Team etched their name in football history once again, clinching their third FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup title after a 1-0 triumph over Japan in the final held at Estadio El Campín, Bogotá.
On the grandest stage, DPR Korea’s dominance was clear from the outset. Ri Song-ho’s side set the tempo early, suffocating Japan with relentless pressure, incisive movement, and lethal counter-attacks. Japan, known for their tactical discipline, struggled to keep up with DPR Korea’s intensity.
Central to DPR Korea’s success was Choe Il-son, the 17-year-old sensation and adidas Golden Boot winner. From the opening minutes, she threatened Japan’s defense, forcing a crucial save from Japanese goalkeeper Akane Okuma in just the fifth minute. Moments later, in the 15th minute, Choe delivered the decisive blow with a solo effort that will be remembered as one of the finest goals of the tournament.
Picking up the ball on Japan’s left flank, Choe breezed past Rio Sasaki, danced her way into the penalty area, and twisted Aemu Oyama inside-out before sending a shot through a sea of defenders. The ball deflected slightly off Uno Shiragaki’s head, flying past the helpless Okuma to give DPR Korea a 1-0 lead.
Japan struggled to cope with the Korean press throughout the match, often resorting to speculative long-range efforts. One such shot from Manaka Matsukubo sailed harmlessly over the bar, reflecting Japan’s frustration as the first half came to a close.
In the second half, DPR Korea maintained their grip on the game. Both Sin Hyang and Choe had opportunities to extend the lead, sending shots over the bar. Japan, meanwhile, managed their first shot on target only in the 82nd minute. However, Shinomi Koyama’s weak effort was easily collected by Korean goalkeeper Chae Un-gyong, symbolizing Japan’s struggles against the impenetrable Korean defense.
As the final whistle blew, DPR Korea celebrated a well-deserved victory, confirming their status as the tournament’s most dominant team. Their relentless work ethic, tactical discipline, and technical prowess saw them rise to the pinnacle of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup once again.
With this win, DPR Korea U20 Women’s National Team not only secured their third title but also solidified their legacy as one of the premier teams in youth women’s football, leaving an indelible mark on the 2024 edition of the tournament.
With this victory, DPR Korea joins Germany and the USA as the only teams to have won the tournament three times, cementing their status as one of the most dominant forces in youth football.
