Malaysia delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 China Open Badminton Championship, with six out of nine national pairs advancing to the quarter-finals after a series of commanding displays across multiple categories.
In mixed doubles, national top pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei showcased remarkable mental resilience. Trailing 14-20 in the first set, they mounted a stunning comeback to edge it 22-20 before securing the match in straight sets with a 21-17 win in the second.
Their success was mirrored in the women’s doubles by Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, who cruised past Japan’s Rui Hirokami and Sayaka Hobara in straight sets, 21-17, 21-13, maintaining their strong tournament form.
In men’s doubles, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi proved too strong for Thailand’s Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol Puavaranukroh, winning 21-16, 21-16 in a controlled performance.
Malaysia’s world-class duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik also lived up to expectations, seeing off the French sibling pair Christo and Toma Junior Popov with a confident 21-17, 21-18 victory.
Either Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun No.6 from Malaysia wins, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong‘s compatriot pair 2-1 (17-21, 21-17, 21-19) will progress from the clash and face Aaron-Soh in the next round—guaranteeing Malaysia at least one representative in the semi-finals.
In another thrilling upset, women’s pair Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing shocked the sixth-seeded Japanese duo Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in a three-set battle: 26-24, 7-21, 21-18.
