Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, saw their dream of capturing a maiden BWF World Tour Super 1000 title slip away once more after falling to Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Shohibul Fikri in the final of the China Open.
The world No. 2 duo were unable to find their rhythm and fell 15-21, 14-21 in a one-sided contest at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou on Sunday (July 27). The match lasted just 35 minutes.
Fajar and Shohibul, competing in only their second tournament together after the Japan Open last week, delivered a clinical performance, dominating both offense and defense to secure the victory.
It was a bitter disappointment for Aaron and Wooi Yik, who were also runners-up at the 2023 edition of the China Open, having lost to Chinese pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in the final.
The defeat highlights the ongoing challenge for the Malaysian pair in converting final appearances into titles at the sport’s highest level. While their consistency is commendable, the wait for a breakthrough Super 1000 crown continues.
