Bafétimbi Gomis, the former Swansea City striker and renowned goal-scorer, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 39.
The 12-cap French international confirmed his decision during a television appearance in France, marking the end of a storied career that spanned over two decades.
Gomis will be remembered not only for his clinical ability in front of goal but also for his unique celebration—the iconic “panther” pose, where he mimicked stalking and clawing prey after scoring. This celebration became a signature move during his two-year Premier League stint with Swansea City.
Despite arriving at Swansea from Lyon in 2014 with high expectations, Gomis netted 17 goals in his time at the Liberty Stadium. His strikes included pivotal match-winners against Manchester United and Arsenal, showcasing his knack for rising to the occasion.
Before joining Swansea, Gomis made a name for himself in Ligue 1, excelling at Saint-Étienne and later Lyon, where his consistent performances solidified his reputation as one of France’s top strikers.
Following his time in the Premier League, Gomis embarked on an international journey, featuring for clubs such as Marseille (on loan in 2016), and Galatasaray, where he enjoyed significant success, including a second stint with the Turkish giants, Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, contributing to the league’s growing prominence, Kawasaki Frontale in Japan, where he concluded his playing career after mutually parting ways last month.
Gomis confirmed his retirement while working as a pundit during the highly anticipated derby between his former clubs, Saint-Étienne and Lyon. Known for his versatility, strength, and composure, Gomis left an indelible mark on French football, with his success abroad further underscoring his impact on the global stage.
As Gomis transitions to life off the pitch, fans around the world will remember him for his passion, his trademark celebration, and his contributions to every team he represented. His retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy as a prolific striker and fan favorite will endure for years to come.
