Spanish football legend Andrés Iniesta has officially announced his retirement at the age of 40, marking the end of a remarkable 22-year career.
The 2010 World Cup winner chose 8 October 2024 as the symbolic date for his retirement, a nod to the iconic number eight shirt he wore throughout his illustrious career.
Iniesta confirmed during a press conference in Barcelona that he is shifting his focus to a coaching career, having already begun his managerial studies. In an emotional statement, the former midfield maestro reflected on his journey: “I never thought this day would come, but these are tears of excitement and pride, not of sadness. These are tears of the kid from Fuentealbilla who dreamed of being a footballer, and I did it; we did it. I feel very proud of this journey.”
Born in Castilla-La Mancha, Iniesta joined FC Barcelona‘s famous La Masia academy at the age of 12. He went on to become one of the most decorated players in the club’s history. Making his first-team debut at just 18, Iniesta made 674 appearances for the Catalan giants, winning an incredible 32 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles.
One of Iniesta’s most memorable moments came in the 2009 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. His last-minute equalizer in the second leg sent Barcelona through to the final on away goals, where they clinched their third Champions League title.
On the international stage, Iniesta cemented his legacy with a stunning performance in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His unforgettable 116th-minute goal in the final secured Spain’s first-ever World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands. His celebration, a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Dani Jarque, the captain of RCD Espanyol, resonated deeply in the football world.
Iniesta was a pivotal figure in Spain’s golden generation, helping La Roja to back-to-back European Championship victories in 2008 and 2012. His 131 caps place him as the fifth most-capped player in Spain’s history.
After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued his career in Japan with Vissel Kobe, where he made over 100 appearances. He concluded his professional journey with Emirates Club in the United Arab Emirates, bringing a graceful end to an exceptional career.
