The Vietnam U23 national team defeated the Malaysia U23 national team, with a score of 2-0 in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2022 group stage, group C, at the Lokomotiv Stadium, Tashkent.
Start the match, in the 2nd minute The Malaysia U23 had a chance from the left side but unfortunately, the Vietnam National Team defended well inside their box.
About 6th minutes, the Vietnam Team’s goalkeeper went out of the box to defend the ball and passed wrongly to the feet of a Malaysia player, then, the ball was passed to Quentin Cheng for a lob ball chance, but the ball goes wide.
For the first 11th minutes, the Vietnam team tried to push as hard as possible to stress the Malaysia team. The Malaysia team was forced to leave out only one striker at the top of the field and the rest was instructed to defend at the back of the field.
The deadlock was broken by Vietnam in the 27th minute, Nhâm Mạnh Dũng. Thanh Nhân Nguyễn did a beautiful assist to his teammate, and scored by Nhâm Mạnh Dũng, to a powerful heading that let Vietnam leads 1-0.
Next, in the 31st minute, the Vietnam player Nhâm Mạnh Dũng had a chance to shoot, the ball was lobbed and it was protected well by the Malaysia keeper Muhammad Firdaus Imran, the ball almost went in to the goal post but luckily the Malaysia kept it clear off the line.
Vietnam could have been two goals up in the 39th minute but the heading by Nhâm Mạnh Dũng was too powerful that goes above the goal post.
A minute was added to half time. Dung Quang Nho dribbled across Hairiey Hakim and had a 1v1 chance against the goalkeeper but it was denied by the Malaysia defender, Zikri Khalili from behind. After that, the Vietnam player complained that it has a controversy the handball when Hairiey Hakim tackled the ball. The referee paused the game and waited for the VAR to check of a possible handball penalty. The referee proceeds to the VAR checking station to replay the video and checked himself. The referee pointed to the penalty spot. Vietnam received a penalty. Hairiey Hakim received a red card as an infringement of the handball incident earlier. Malaysia team was down to 10 men.
The penalty was taken by the Vietnam captain, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, by a soft lob. It was saved by the goalkeeper at first but Bui Hoang Viet Anh quickly rebounded. Vietnam scored, the score was 2-0, which lets Vietnam leading in the first half.
At the start of the second half, Malaysia National Team Manager B. Maloney made a tactical change to add more defenders to defend the back. Muhammad Shafi Azswad was substituted by Azam Azmi, a Malaysia defender.
46th minutes, Vietnam decided to add more strikers and defenders, by substituting the 2 midfielders Huỳnh Công Đến and Văn Công Trần who was then replaced by Văn Trường Nguyễn (Striker) and Lương Duy Cương (Defender).
At the 56th minute, the goal scorer Nhâm Mạnh Dũng substituted by Nguyễn Văn Tùng.
In the 59th minute, the Vietnam player, Văn Trường Nguyễn, a substitute, dribbled across Malaysia’s midfield and tried a shot, unfortunately, the Malaysia keeper was ready to deny the ball but it was shot wide. Vietnam 2-0.
Vietnam striker Nguyễn Văn Tùng had a chance to try his luck. In the 62nd minute, The ball was crossed by the left-wing, Thanh Nhân Nguyễn. The ball hit the post and was then denied by the Malaysia keeper. The ball does not cross the line. No goal was awarded. Vietnam still leading 2 against Malaysia.
69 minutes, Vietnam defender Vũ Tiến Long was replaced by a midfielder Nguyễn Văn Tùng; while the Malaysia stricker Mukhairi Ajmal was replaced by Muhammad Hadi Fayyadh.
70 minutes, Dung Quang Nho made a dangerous shot and almost went in, but it stayed off target.
Up until 72 minutes, the Vietnam team is still pressing very high and trying to create more goals. Vietnam replaced captain Bui Hoang Viet Anh with Anh Việt Đoàn.
The substitute Lương Duy Cương dribbled across the defenders and tried his luck, again, the ball stayed off target.
75 minutes, a corner kick was awarded to Malaysia. The ball crossed to Quentin Cheng’s spots, and he heads it, but unfortunately, it wasn’t on target.
In the late match, 2 minutes of extra time were added, and the game ended 2-0. Vietnam advanced to the Quarter-Final of the AFC U23 Asian Cup.
