Machida Zelvia produced a disciplined and resilient performance to edge past former champions Al Ittihad 1-0, sealing a historic place in the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 semi-finals in Jeddah.
In a match dominated early by the Saudi giants, it was Machida who struck with clinical precision. A long throw from Kotaro Hayashi caused chaos in the Al Ittihad penalty area before Yengi’s effort — aided by a deflection off Fabinho — found the back of the net.
That single goal ultimately separated the sides in a high-intensity quarter-final clash at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, Al Ittihad started brightly with Moussa Diaby and Roger Fernandes both testing the Machida defence early on.
Under head coach Go Kuroda, Machida showcased tactical maturity beyond their tournament debutant status. Absorbing pressure and striking on the counter, the Japanese side executed their game plan with precision.
While Al Ittihad dominated possession, Machida’s compact defensive structure and quick transitions proved decisive.
The victory sets up a semi-final showdown against either Buriram United or Shabab Al Ahli, as Machida continue their fairytale run on the continental stage.
