Malaysian Football League (MFL) has issued an official clarification regarding the postponement of the Super League match between Perak FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at Perak Stadium in Ipoh on October 5, 2024. The decision, made in line with the 2024-2025 Malaysian League Manual, was the result of adverse weather conditions that rendered the pitch unfit for play.
The postponement was made in accordance with Rule 2.8.1 of the Malaysian League Manual, which outlines procedures for matches abandoned due to weather or other conditions that make the pitch unusable. Heavy rain leading up to the match had severely affected the playing surface, forcing the Match Commissioner to initiate the postponement process.
At 6:00 p.m., a preliminary pitch inspection was conducted, but the Match Commissioner emphasized that this initial inspection does not determine the final decision on whether a match proceeds. Instead, the match’s status is reassessed based on the pitch conditions closer to the scheduled 8:15 p.m. kickoff, at which point the field was still deemed unplayable.
In accordance with the competition rules, both teams were informed of a mandatory 60-minute waiting period (divided into two 30-minute intervals), during which time the Match Commissioner reassessed the pitch in hopes of a possible restart. Unfortunately, after the full waiting period had expired, the pitch remained unfit for play, leading to the final decision to postpone the match.
MFL stressed that this process was thoroughly communicated to Perak FC, refuting claims made by the club that they were not given sufficient time or opportunity to discuss the situation. MFL described these statements as contradictory and not reflective of the actual events, reaffirming that Perak FC was fully aware of the pitch inspection and waiting procedure.
MFL acknowledged Perak FC’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the Perak Stadium with support from a grant provided by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). The postponement underscores the urgent need for improvements to the stadium, particularly regarding the condition of the pitch. MFL also encouraged other clubs to address similar issues at their respective venues.
MFL expressed understanding of the disappointment felt by supporters following the postponement but stressed that the decision was made with careful consideration of all factors, particularly the safety of players and the quality of the playing conditions. MFL remains committed to ensuring the integrity of the competition and the experience of fans, while working with clubs to improve infrastructure and minimize such disruptions in the future.
A new date for the rescheduled match will be announced soon, as both teams look forward to facing each other in better conditions.
