Johor Darul Ta’zim head coach Xisco Muñoz has called on his players to maintain full concentration and emotional maturity ahead of their decisive second-leg clash against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the Round of 16 of the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference alongside midfielder Eddy Israfilov, Muñoz emphasised that his team must treat the encounter as a completely new match, despite carrying a valuable advantage from the first leg.
Muñoz acknowledged that the encounter against the Japanese side will be a demanding challenge, stressing the quality and discipline of their opponents.
“It’s a tough game tomorrow. We know they are a strong team who play very well and they will demand our best level,” he said.
“For us, the most important thing is to forget the previous result. Tomorrow is a new game, a new battle.”
The Spaniard added that his players must enter the match with confidence, character and the right mentality.
“We want to show our character and our behaviour on the pitch. These are the kind of matches we must enjoy because they are special games for the players, the club and the fans.”
Muñoz also addressed concerns regarding the absence of three players for the upcoming fixture but insisted the squad has enough depth to cope with the situation.
“We are looking forward and focusing on the players who are ready to play,” he explained.
“Of course I feel for the players who cannot be involved because they would make our squad even stronger. But this is football.”
“We have a big squad with quality players and we must replace them and give our best performance tomorrow.”
Midfielder Eddy Israfilov echoed his coach’s confidence, stating that the team will approach the match with determination and personality.
“We will play with personality, we will enjoy the game and fight strongly,” Israfilov said.
“It’s a new match and a new opportunity to progress. We want to create history for Johor and for Malaysian football.”
For Johor Darul Ta’zim, the clash represents another opportunity to elevate the club’s standing on the continental stage.
Muñoz acknowledged that the players understand the significance of the moment but stressed that focus must remain on the performance rather than the occasion.
“Sometimes when you are close to closing the door, it becomes even more difficult,” he said.
“But I am very proud of my players. We have worked together for eight or nine months and they continue to work hard every day.”
“There are many examples in football where everything can change until the final moment, so we must stay ready for the battle.”
