Spain produced another statement performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cruising to a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria to secure their place in the Round of 16 and underline their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.
Spain wasted little time asserting their authority, nearly taking the lead inside the opening minute when Lamine Yamal capitalised on a defensive mistake before forcing Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager into an early save.

Rangnick attempted to change the momentum after the break with a double substitution in midfield, but Spain continued to dictate proceedings.
Austria briefly threatened after the introductions of Marko Arnautovic and Sasa Kalajdzic, with the latter heading narrowly over from another dangerous Sabitzer delivery.
Any hopes of an Austrian comeback were quickly extinguished. In the 67th minute, Cucurella burst down the left flank before delivering a precise cross that found the unmarked Pedro Porro, who headed home comfortably to double Spain’s advantage.
As Austria pushed forward late in the contest, the Spanish attack continued to exploit the spaces left behind. Five minutes from time, Cucurella once again turned provider, delivering another pinpoint cross for Oyarzabal, who finished clinically to complete his brace and seal a convincing 3-0 victory.
The comprehensive victory sends Spain confidently into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between Portugal and Croatia in Dallas.
For Austria, meanwhile, the defeat brings their World Cup campaign to a disappointing end. Despite an encouraging tournament overall, Rangnick’s side found themselves unable to match the quality, composure, and relentless attacking play of one of the competition’s strongest contenders.
Spain’s latest dominant display reinforces their status as genuine title challengers as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
