Malaysia Women’s Badminton national team clinched its first victory against Australia Women’s Badminton national team 4-1 pairs in the Uber Cup 2024 Group stage, Group B matchday 3 at Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chengdu.
For the record, Malaysia has out already after suffered two defeats before, including losing 1-4 to Taiwan in the curtain-raiser in addition to being beaten 0-5 by Thailand last Monday.
Malaysia started a winning streak through the main singles, Goh Jin Wei after he won 21-6, 21-12 over Tiffany Ho.
However, Australia leveled the score again at 1-1 when Setyana Mapasa-Angela Yu pulled off a surprise by beating Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing in straight sets 21-15, 21-17.
Stunned by the defeat suffered by Pei Kee-Mei Xing, Wong Ling Ching who went down as the second singles again put Malaysia 2-1 ahead with a 21-16, 21-3 victory over Sydney Tjonadi in 31 minutes.
Then, the country’s second doubles team, Ho Lo Ee-Tan Zhing Yi, were forced to sweat before beating Kaitlyn Ea-Gronya Sommerville in a three-set action 21-12, 13-21, 21-10 to ensure Malaysia took a 3-1 lead.
Siti Zulaikha Muhammad Azmi, who was fielded for the first time in the Uber Cup this time, completed the national team’s victory when she contributed the fourth point after winning easily 21-10, 21-10 over Isabella Yan.
The victory saw Malaysia end the challenge at the biennial tournament as the third best team at the group stage, but failed to advance to the knockout round.
