History was made in Santiago as Morocco’s Under-20 national team captured the FIFA U20 World Cup 2025 title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Argentina, marking the first-ever World Cup triumph at any age level in the nation’s football history.
A brace from Yassir Zabiri, the dynamic midfielder from Portugal’s FC Famalicão, sealed Morocco’s golden night as the Atlas Cubs completed a remarkable journey that will be remembered as one of Africa’s greatest youth football achievements.
Zabiri struck twice in the first half — first with a precise finish in the 23rd minute, then doubling the lead just before halftime with a composed strike past Argentina’s goalkeeper. His performance not only earned him the Man of the Match award but also etched his name in Moroccan football folklore.
The North African side showcased tactical discipline, composure, and attacking flair, nullifying Argentina’s trademark aggression and controlling the tempo for much of the match. Despite Argentina’s late surge in the second half, Morocco’s defense — anchored by captain Amine Ouzzine — held firm to preserve the clean sheet.
Morocco’s road to glory was nothing short of spectacular. The Atlas Cubs defeated South Korea, the United States, and France in the knockout stages before overcoming a heavily favored Argentina in the final.
The victory made Morocco the first African nation since Ghana in 2009 to win the U-20 World Cup — and the first from North Africa to ever lift the trophy.
