Malaysia U20 Women’s national team needs to win in the last match for a chance to pass to the next round after losing to Cambodia U20 Women’s national team with a score of 0-1 in the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers 1st round Group G at Smart RSN Stadium, Phnom Penh.
In that action, the national player, Nurfarisya Hanim Muhamad Zaki’s long shot that was deflected by the Cambodian goalkeeper, Cha Fariya before stopping on the crossbar became the country’s best chance in the 13th minute.
Cambodia had a chance with a free kick from a good angle in the 23rd minute but Somrit Nimol’s effort went over the bar followed by several more miscues by the hosts.
Fariya continued to excel when he deflected the attempt of the national player, S Thivashini for the result to remain 0-0 until the end of the first period.
Continuing the second half, Toum Romdoul’s movement succeeded in deceiving the national defense in the 59th minute but his shot was weak and caught by the national goalkeeper, Daliea Eliesa.
Fariya once again disappointed the national team when he managed to chip away Najwa Idrina’s long-range attempts in the 72nd minute and the 84th minute.
Cambodian striker Tun Kimhong gifted the home team the winning goal after finishing off Heng Sovanmony’s cross in the fourth minute of extra time.
The result saw Malaysia need to win at least 3-0 against Myanmar to revive their chances of advancing to the second round.
For the record, only eight group champions will continue the fight to the second round scheduled to take place from 3 to 11 June 2023.
