Malaysia’s dream of reaching the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Finals came to an end after suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Philippines in their final Group Stage match at the Central Stadium, Dushanbe.
The Malayan Tigress, led by captain Nur Qistina and goalkeeper Putri Aina, entered the match needing a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. Meanwhile, the Philippines, skippered by Aiselyn Sia with Bradley commanding the defensive line, looked determined to maintain their perfect record in the qualifiers.
The Filipinas made a flying start, breaking the deadlock as early as the 5th minute when Luna Rivera pounced on a loose ball to slot home the opener. The early goal stunned Malaysia, who then pushed forward in search of an equaliser with Laila Syamila leading the attacking charge.
However, the Philippines doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute through Chiara Mizzo, whose clinical finish from outside the box left Malaysia’s defence rooted. Despite the Tigress’ best efforts to regroup, the first half ended 2-0 in favour of the Filipinas.
Malaysia came out stronger after the interval, displaying more urgency and aggression in attack. Yet, the Philippines maintained control of the midfield and continued to threaten on the counter.
Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when captain Aiselyn Sia converted from a corner to make it 3-0, effectively extinguishing Malaysia’s hopes of a comeback. Ten minutes later, a moment of misfortune saw Nur Diana inadvertently turn the ball into her own net, handing the Philippines their fourth goal of the night.
The final whistle confirmed a 4-0 victory for the Philippines — a result that saw them top the group and qualify for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup Finals with a flawless record.
For Malaysia, despite spirited performances earlier in the campaign, the defeat meant elimination from the qualifiers as only the group winners advance to the prestigious continental tournament.
