Malaysia U17 women’s national team continued their fine form in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Syria at Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe.
Head coach Leila Chua fielded Putri Aina in goal, with captain Nur Qistina leading the midfield and Laila Syamila spearheading the attack.
Malaysia made a dream start when Zafirah Zulaikha opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a stunning strike from outside the penalty area, giving the Young Tigress an early advantage.
Despite several threatening attacks from Malaysia, the Syrian defence stood firm to prevent further damage. The Syrians also created a few dangerous chances, but goalkeeper Putri Aina displayed great composure to deny their attempts.
At halftime, Malaysia maintained their 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Malaysia pressing high in search of a second goal. Zafirah, who had been lively throughout, continued to trouble the Syrian backline with her quick movement and sharp finishing.
Syria tried to push forward in the closing stages, but Malaysia’s defence, marshalled by Nur Qistina and Aina Natasha, remained disciplined and well-organized.
After 90 minutes, the referee’s whistle confirmed Malaysia’s second straight victory in Group A, ensuring another full three points and strengthening their position in the qualifiers.
Malaysia will next face Philippines in their final qualifying fixture at the same venue, aiming to secure a historic place in the next stage of the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup.
