Tengku Abdul Rahman Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah(TMP) has clarified his role in the recent discussions surrounding the introduction of Malaysian heritage players, explaining that his involvement was purely to facilitate connections between player agents and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for proper evaluation.
TMP revealed that several football agents had contacted him at the end of 2024, proposing players of Malaysian descent for consideration by the national football body.
“Since the end of 2024, several agents reached out to me with suggestions of players with Malaysian heritage for evaluation. I simply referred their names to the FAM for further assessment,” said Tengku Abdul Rahman.
His Royal Highness emphasized that these recommendations were made in good faith, with the sole intention of helping strengthen the Harimau Malaya squad by identifying potential talents of Malaysian heritage currently based overseas.
“Among the players I recommended were the seven heritage players who are now under FIFA’s review. For clarification, all of them had already obtained Malaysian citizenship lawfully through government-recognized procedures,” he explained.
Tengku Abdul Rahman added that the main purpose of these efforts was to assist FAM in broadening its player pool and offering more tactical flexibility to the national team setup.
“All these efforts were carried out with the intention of reinforcing the Harimau Malaya squad and elevating the national football standard. I firmly believe that quality heritage and naturalized players can bring immense value to the national team,” he added.
This is not the first time Tengku Abdul Rahman has contributed to Malaysian football’s talent development. During his time with Pahang FA, he was also involved in introducing several impactful naturalized players such as Mohamadou Sumareh, Ezequiel Aguero, and Lee Tuck, all of whom strengthened the team and contributed positively to Malaysia’s football progress.
