The Acting Sultan of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail (TMJ), has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the Harimau Malaya squad by confirming the identification of six to seven heritage players who could potentially bolster the national football team.
This significant development was shared by TMJ, the driving force behind the revolution in Malaysian football, through an Instagram post earlier today.
TMJ’s efforts were underscored by a photo featuring him alongside key figures such as the Harimau Malaya Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Robert Douglas Friend, and the National Team’s Head of High Performance and Sports Medicine, Dr. Craig Duncan. Adding further weight to the initiative was the presence of Australian football legend Tim Cahill, who serves as TMJ’s advisor on sports and international relations.
In his statement, TMJ expressed his hopes that the process of securing Malaysian passports for these identified heritage players could be expedited. Their participation would be crucial for Malaysia’s campaign in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, set to kick off in March 2025.
“We have identified six to seven legacy players for the Harimau Malaya team. It is hoped that the Malaysian government can assist in the process of obtaining Malaysian passports so that they can play for Harimau Malaya in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers starting this March,” TMJ stated.
“It is imperative that Harimau Malaya starts the qualifying campaign with a positive result,” he added.
The push to include heritage players in the national team has sparked speculation about several foreign players with alleged Malaysian lineage, including Burnley captain Josh Brownhill. However, not all claims have been substantiated, with some players, like Brownhill, publicly denying any blood ties to Malaysia.
TMJ previously revealed that some prospective heritage players were unaware of their connection to Malaysia, while others outright denied having Malaysian ancestry. Despite these setbacks, TMJ assured fans that the search for eligible players would continue on a broader scale to strengthen the national squad.
The addition of heritage players is part of a strategic vision to elevate Harimau Malaya’s performance on the international stage. The involvement of TMJ, along with experienced professionals like Rob Friend and Dr. Craig Duncan, highlights a coordinated effort to address gaps in the squad.
Securing positive results in the AFC Asian Qualifiers 2027 is essential, not only to boost Malaysia’s chances of qualifying but also to enhance the team’s competitiveness in Asia.
