England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted his players are still carrying the emotional scars of their dramatic FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat to Argentina, insisting the Three Lions must accept the painful reality that they still have work to do before they can consistently compete with the world’s elite.
Speaking ahead of England’s third-place playoff against France in Miami, Tuchel accepted full responsibility for the tactical decisions that came under heavy criticism following Wednesday’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in Atlanta.
England appeared destined for their first FIFA World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966 after Anthony Gordon fired them into the lead. However, late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez completed a stunning Argentine comeback, ending England’s title dream.
The German coach, who is leading England at his first major tournament since taking charge, refused to shy away from the criticism directed at his in-game management.
“I tried to help and support the team,” Tuchel said.
“I made those decisions based on instinct, experience, and my competitive nature because I believed they would help us achieve the result we wanted.”
“We didn’t get that result, so of course I take responsibility for those decisions.”
“But every decision was made under enormous pressure while the match was unfolding.”
Tuchel revealed that no outside criticism hurts more than the disappointment already felt inside the England dressing room.
According to the England boss, the defeat will remain a lasting memory for both himself and his players.
“We have to live with this result.”
“It is our pain, my pain, and the players’ pain.”
“We are the ones who feel it the most.”
“These are scars we will carry with us.”
“It was an incredibly painful defeat, and we have to accept it first before dealing with criticism or expert opinions.”
“Even our families are hurting because they only want the best for us.”
“Ultimately, we are the ones who have to carry this burden.”
England now shift their focus to the third-place playoff against France, who themselves were beaten 2-0 by reigning European champions Spain in the other semi-final.
Although the match no longer offers a chance to lift the World Cup, Tuchel believes it remains an important opportunity for his squad to respond positively after one of their most painful defeats in recent memory.
