Malaysia’s Under-21 men’s hockey team, the Young Tigers, breathed new life into their 13th Sultan of Johor Cup (SOJC) campaign after battling to a hard-fought 1–1 draw against powerhouse Australia at the Johor Hockey Stadium, Taman Daya.
Malaysia started the match cautiously but confidently, matching Australia in midfield and launching several promising attacks through the flanks. Their persistence paid off in the 13th minute, when Azimuddin Shakir Kamaruddin converted a penalty corner with a low flick that beat Australian goalkeeper Matthew Edwards, sending the home crowd into celebration.
The hosts maintained their momentum after the early goal, pressing high and creating several more opportunities, but they couldn’t extend their lead before halftime.
The Burras, runners-up in last year’s edition, began to turn up the pressure in the third quarter, testing Malaysia’s defensive line repeatedly. Despite the onslaught, the Young Tigers held firm — thanks to the defensive organization and solid goalkeeping from Haziq Muizuddin Hairul Mizan.
Malaysia came close to doubling their advantage in the 38th minute, when Harris Iskandar Osman narrowly missed the target after a clever setup from Azimuddin during another penalty corner situation.
Australia eventually found their breakthrough in the final quarter, with Ian Grobbelaar scoring from a penalty corner drag flick that sailed into the top left corner, leaving Haziq no chance.
While victory slipped away, the draw was a crucial result for Malaysia’s young squad, proving their ability to compete with top-tier teams on the international stage.
The Young Tigers will look to build on this performance when they face New Zealand in their next group match as they continue their push to reach the semifinals of the 13th Sultan of Johor Cup.
