Malaysia produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening round at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2026 after mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin stunned world No.1 Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping of China in sensational fashion on Tuesday.
The Malaysian duo delivered a fearless performance to defeat the tournament’s top seeds 23-21, 21-16 in the Round of 32 of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 event, marking a massive statement for Malaysia’s rising mixed doubles department.
Jimmy and Su Yin showed composure under pressure throughout the opening game before edging the Chinese pair in a tense finish. Riding on momentum and aggressive front-court play, the Malaysians dominated the second game to seal one of the standout victories of the tournament so far.
The victory immediately became the headline result for Team Malaysia in Singapore and further strengthens hopes for a deep run in the mixed doubles category.
While Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin celebrated a memorable triumph, it was a tougher day for several Malaysian representatives in other categories.
In men’s singles, Leong Jun Hao started strongly against Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hao by taking the first game 21-18. However, the Taiwanese player mounted a comeback to win 18-21, 22-20, 21-8 and eliminate the Malaysian shuttler in three games.
Malaysia’s women’s singles challenge also suffered an early setback after Wong Ling Ching fell 20-22, 17-21 to Japan’s Riko Gunji despite showing fighting spirit throughout the contest.
Men’s doubles pair Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai emerged victorious in an all-Malaysian clash after defeating Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong in straight games, 21-15, 21-17.
The young combination displayed sharp attacking play and strong defensive discipline to secure their place in the next round.
However, another Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Choi Sol Gyu-Goh V Shem, were unable to progress after losing 21-14, 18-21, 15-21 to Taiwan’s He Zhi-Wei-Huang Jui-Hsuan.
The opening day results highlighted both the promise and challenges facing Malaysia’s contingent in Singapore, but the stunning upset by Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin over the world No.1 pair has undoubtedly injected fresh confidence into the camp.
