Selangor FC booked their place in the next round of the Shopee Cup 2025/26 after holding Thai giants BG Pathum United to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their fifth group match at MBPJ Stadium, Petaling Jaya.
Despite playing the majority of the match with 10 men, The Red Giants showed immense resilience in front of their home supporters at the Stadium Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya, sealing qualification with a disciplined performance.
Selangor started with Kalamullah Al-Hafiz in goal, while national star Faisal Halim captained the side. The attacking burden was led by the partnership of Alvin Fortes and Chrigor Moraes.
BG Pathum, meanwhile, named Saranon Anuin between the posts, with Singapore international Ikhsan Fandi and Thai playmaker Chanathip Songkrasin spearheading their offensive threat.
The Red Giants came out aggressively, feeding off the energy of a packed stadium as Faisal and Chrigor launched early attacks on the BG Pathum defence.
However, the match turned on its head in the 25th minute, when Selangor were reduced to 10 men after Alvin Fortes received a straight red card for a heavy challenge on BG Pathum captain Kritsada Kaman.
Despite the setback, Selangor remained composed, and their breakthrough arrived in the 35th minute when Faisal Halim fired home the opening goal, sending the home crowd into celebration and strengthening their hopes of progression. Selangor went into halftime leading 1-0.
The second half saw BG Pathum take full control, piling pressure on Selangor’s defence as Kalamullah produced several outstanding saves — including a crucial stop from Tomoyuki Doi.
The visitors finally drew level in the 63rd minute, but in unfortunate fashion for Selangor, as defender Richmond Ankrah scored an own goal, accidentally diverting the ball into his own net.
BG Pathum continued to push for a winner. Chatmongkol Tongkiri struck the crossbar in the 68th minute, while Ikhsan Fandi came close with a powerful header — only to be denied again by the brilliance of Kalamullah.
The match ended 1-1, a result that proved enough to send Selangor into the next stage of the Shopee Cup.
