Vietnam U22 struck twice in stoppage time to edge past a stubborn Philippines side 2–0 in the Men’s Football Semi-Final of the SEA Games 2025 at Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok.
Vietnam began on the front foot and threatened early through a pinpoint cross from Phi Hoang in the 5th minute, but Van Khang failed to convert from a promising position.
The Philippines responded swiftly, with former La Masia trainee Sandro Reyes finding space inside the box, only to miscue his finish — a reminder that the underdogs were dangerous on the counter.
As the first half wore on, the Filipinos sat deep and defended resolutely. Vietnam found it difficult to break through, while the physical nature of the contest saw Dinh Bac booked after a rash challenge. A long throw in the 34th minute briefly unsettled Vietnam’s backline, but a last-ditch clearance kept the scores level.
Vietnam’s best chance of the half arrived in stoppage time when Van Khang fired a powerful left-footed effort, but the ball went straight at the Philippines goalkeeper, ensuring a goalless first half.
The pattern remained unchanged after the restart. Vietnam dominated possession but lacked incision, while the Philippines stayed compact and disciplined. Thanh Nhan picked up a yellow card in the 62nd minute after committing a tactical foul to halt a counter-attack.
Opportunities finally emerged. In the 68th minute, Thanh Nhan met another Phi Hoang delivery with a flying header, narrowly missing the target. Moments later, Phi Hoang again caused problems down the flank, teeing up Xuan Bac, whose on-target effort was comfortably saved by Nicholas
Just as the match seemed destined for extra time, Vietnam’s persistence paid off. In the 89th minute, Dinh Bac won a crucial duel and released Phi Hoang on the left. His cut-back found Le Van Thuan, who finished from close range to finally break the deadlock.
With momentum firmly on their side, Vietnam delivered the knockout blow in 90+2 minutes. Thanh Nhan curled a clever free-kick that bounced awkwardly before nestling into the net, leaving the Philippines goalkeeper stranded and ending any hopes of a comeback.
The late double strike underlined Vietnam U22’s composure and belief, sending them through to the men’s football final after a tense and hard-fought semi-final.
