Malaysia U23’s dream of a SEA Games 2025 gold medal came to a painful halt after a 0–1 defeat to hosts Thailand U23 in the men’s football semi-final at Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok.
The match started at a high tempo, but Malaysia were dealt an early blow in the 8th minute when Thailand were awarded a free-kick just outside the box. Yotsakorn Buraphan stepped up and fired a direct effort past the Malaysian defence to give the Young War Elephants a 1–0 lead.
Things went from bad to worse for Malaysia in the 17th minute. Aiman Yusuf committed a foul on Iklas Sanhron and was shown a second yellow card, reducing Malaysia to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
Despite the setback, Malaysia refused to sit back. The Young Tigers continued to push forward and created two to three promising chances before the break, but composure in the final third was lacking.
Thailand maintained control of possession but failed to capitalise further, and the first half ended with the hosts narrowly leading 1–0.
The second half saw Malaysia show admirable fighting spirit. Even with a man down, they pressed high and looked for an equaliser, troubling the Thai backline on several occasions.
Thailand nearly doubled their advantage in the 70th minute when Yotsakorn Buraphan unleashed a shot that narrowly missed the far post. Six minutes later, Thanakrit Chotmuangpak tested Malaysia goalkeeper Zulhilmi Sharani with a powerful effort from outside the box, but the shot-stopper stood firm to keep Malaysia in the game.
No further goals were scored, and Thailand held on for a 1–0 victory, booking their place in the SEA Games 2025 men’s football final.
For Malaysia, attention now turns to the bronze medal match against the Philippines, scheduled for 18 December at 4:30 PM at Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok — a final opportunity for the Young Tigers to end their campaign on the podium.
