It was another commanding day for the home favourites at the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026, with Malaysian shuttlers delivering a strong showing across multiple categories to book their places in the Round of 16 of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 event.
Leading the charge were mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai, who once again demonstrated grit and composure to overcome Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun–Lee Chia Hsin 15-21, 21-19, 21-14. After dropping the opening game, the eighth seeds lifted their tempo and controlled the mid-court exchanges to turn the match around and keep their title hopes alive.
In men’s singles, rising Malaysian talent Leong Jun Hao produced a confident performance to dismiss China’s Wang Zheng Xing in straight games, 21-17, 21-17, highlighting his growing maturity on the big stage.
Men’s doubles also brought cheer for the home crowd as Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King impressed with a solid 22-20, 21-12 victory over compatriots Choi Sol Gyu–Goh V Shem, showcasing sharp front-court play and consistency under pressure.
World No.2 women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah underlined their title credentials with a ruthless display, sweeping aside India’s Rutupanna Panda–Swetaparna Panda 21-11, 21-9 in a one-sided encounter that barely lasted half an hour.
Capping off the day on a high note, reigning world champions Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik lived up to expectations, cruising past the United States’ Chen Zhi Yi–Presley Smith 21-11, 21-19 to safely progress.
With multiple Malaysian representatives still in the hunt, momentum continues to build for the hosts as the tournament moves into the business end. The focus now shifts to sustaining this impressive run as tougher challenges await in the Round of 16.
