Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the MADANI Government’s commitment to elevating Malaysia’s national football team, Harimau Malaya, to the status of an Asian football powerhouse.
In a heartfelt statement directed to Tunku Mahkota Ismail (TMJ), Regent of Johor, the Prime Minister emphasized the collective effort required to achieve this ambitious goal.
Acknowledging the passion Malaysians share for football, Prime Minister Anwar announced a significant boost in funding for the sport. The government has doubled the initial RM15 million allocation in the 2025 Budget to RM30 million, with half of the increased funds sourced from private sector contributions.
This funding aims to strengthen development programs at all levels, ensuring that the national team is competitive in every international tournament it enters. Key aspects of the allocation include:
- Developing reserve players through greater exposure for the national U-23 squad, ensuring a steady pipeline of talent for Harimau Malaya.
- Revamping organizational management within the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), ensuring players receive professional support from elite coaches and experts.
The Prime Minister expressed deep appreciation for Tunku Mahkota Ismail’s vital role in Malaysian football, highlighting his extensive achievements, experience, and international network.
“The Regent of Johor’s in-depth knowledge of football management and his relationships with international sports figures and clubs are invaluable assets. I hope His Royal Highness will continue to support and guide the Harimau Malaya team, helping it achieve greater success,” said Anwar.
TMJ, a long-time advocate of football development, is recognized for his leadership in revolutionizing Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) into one of Asia’s top football clubs, which has significantly contributed to the national football ecosystem.
Prime Minister Anwar ended his statement with a call for all Malaysians to unite behind the national team.
“I hope Malaysians will continue to support and trust the Harimau Malaya team and its management. Together, we can lift Malaysia’s name to the highest level and place it alongside the giants of international football.”
