Penang FC qualified to round of 16 after slashed Kedah Darul Aman by penalties shoot-out with a score of 4-3 after tied in 120 minutes 2-2 in the Piala FA Malaysia 2023 play-off stage at Darul Aman Stadium, Alor Setar.
Team captain Manuel Ott scored Kedah’s early goal as early as the 9th minute of the match before Penang FC equalized in the 21st minute through import player Giovane Gomez.
KDA’s squad was suddenly shocked by an additional goal scored by Penang FC through its striker Soony Saad in the 67th minute who managed to shoot hard from the left side of the home goal.
Kedah’s captain, Manuel Ott, however, managed to ‘save’ Kedah’s dignity from losing in the 90 minutes of action after scoring an equalizer a minute before the end of the game through a strong shot from outside the penalty box and the 2-2 tie forced the match to continue in extra time.
In extra time, Kedah dominated the game with several attacks, including from Jonathan Balotelli, but Sang Kenari failed to score after Penang FC also continued to strengthen their defense to avoid conceding until the end of extra time for a penalty shootout.
In the thrilling action of the penalty kick, Penang FC however managed to produce four goals while KDA FC failed in two attempts through its players Lee Tuck and Bojan Ciger who finally saw the Penang FC qualify for the round of 16.
