Pau Marti Vicente, head coach of Malaysia national team remains resolute ahead of Malaysia’s crucial ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 Group A fixture against Timor-Leste at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium (SNBJ) tomorrow.
Despite limited player options due to the ongoing league competition, the 41-year-old Spaniard has pledged to secure a victory for the national team.
Addressing the media during the pre-match press conference, Pau Marti emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and determination in the face of challenges.
“I’m delighted to return to SNBJ since September; it’s a venue filled with memories. Playing at home demands character, and we are determined to perform at our best to secure three points,” he stated.
Acknowledging the unique difficulties caused by the league schedule, Pau Marti stressed that his team would adapt to the circumstances.
“Not all players are available because the league is still ongoing, and the preparation period has been very short, with no friendly matches. These conditions are far from ideal, but our players and staff are motivated and ready to face tomorrow’s challenge,” he added.
With Malaysia currently in third place in Group H following a 2-2 draw against Cambodia in the opening match, this game is pivotal. Pau Marti underscored the stakes, reiterating that the clash against Timor-Leste is far from a mere exhibition.
“This is not a friendly. It’s a tournament match, and we are fully committed to earning three points,” he asserted.
While Malaysia enjoys a significant ranking advantage over Timor-Leste, Pau Marti refused to underestimate their opponents.
“Every opponent poses a challenge. We respect Timor-Leste and are preparing for a competitive match. Playing at home gives us an advantage, and we must capitalize on it,” he remarked.
Despite the absence of several key players, Pau Marti expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness and fitness.
“All available players are in good condition. We will field those who are prepared and ready to contribute. High motivation drives us forward despite the constraints,” he said.
With just one point from their opening match, Malaysia must deliver a convincing performance to revive their chances of advancing in the tournament. A win against Timor-Leste would provide a crucial morale boost and keep the Harimau Malaya’s campaign alive.
