Malaysian women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan missed out on a bronze medal after losing to the Japanese pair, Matsuyama Nami and Shida Chiharu, in the bronze medal match of the women’s doubles event at the Olympics 2024, held at Porte de La Chapelle Arena, Paris.
The Malaysian pair lost 21-11, 21-11 in 44 minutes, marking their 10th defeat to the Japanese duo in 11 meetings. Unlike their previous spirited performances, Pearly-Thinaah appeared unsettled and made numerous unforced errors, a stark contrast to their earlier matches.
In the first set, Matsuyama-Shida dominated, capitalizing on the Malaysians’ mistakes and securing a 21-11 win in just 19 minutes. The second set saw no significant comeback from Pearly-Thinaah, as the Japanese pair maintained their control and won 21-11.
Despite the disappointment, Pearly-Thinaah’s overall performance in Paris was commendable. They became the first Malaysian women’s team to reach the semifinals at the Olympics.
