Selangor FC has revenge in Klang Valley Derby after beating Kuala Lumpur City scoring 1-0 in the Liga Super Malaysia 2024/25 at MBPJ Stadium, Petaling Jaya.
The win not only strengthened Selangor’s hold on second place in the league standings but also avenged their first-round defeat to KL City, who had won by the same scoreline in July at the KLFA Stadium.
In their mission to consolidate their position, head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi named national winger Faisal Halim as captain. Despite dominating possession, Selangor struggled to break down KL City’s disciplined defense in the first half.
The breakthrough finally came in the 63rd minute when Alvin Fortes converted a close-range shot, much to the delight of the Red Giants’ fans. Fortes’ goal proved decisive, as Selangor held on to the lead despite intense pressure from the visitors late in the game.
KL City almost spoiled Selangor’s party with two golden opportunities in the dying minutes. Striker Haqimi Azim Rosli and Serbian forward Jovan Motika came close to equalizing in the 85th and 88th minutes, but their attempts were thwarted by Selangor’s solid defense and goalkeeper.
The win brings Selangor FC’s points tally to 38 after 17 matches, keeping them firmly in second place. However, they remain 11 points behind league leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), who have been in imperious form throughout the season.
Meanwhile, KL City FC, who were runners-up in this year’s FA Cup, are in ninth place with 17 points, struggling to find consistency in their league campaign.
