Kuala Lumpur City fortified their grip on second place with a gritty 2-1 victory over a resilient Melaka FC, in the Liga Super Malaysia 2025/26 at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
It was a night of missed sitters, woodwork rattles, and a grandstand finish that proves why Risto Vidakovic’s men are the real deal this season.
KL City started like a team possessed. By the 15th minute, the Melaka box was a disaster zone, but Melaka custodian Samuel Somerville was in inspired form. He pulled off a world-class double save against Antonio Gomes and captain fantastic Paulo Josue to keep the visitors in the hunt.
However, even a “wall” has a breaking point. In the 40th minute, Kamal Azizi Zabri finally found the chink in the armor, unleashing a drive that left Somerville helpless and sent the home crowd into raptures.
Melaka weren’t just there to make up the numbers. Their talisman Do Donghyun nearly turned the game on its head in the 28th minute with a thunderbolt that cannoned off the post. If that had gone in, we’d be talking about a very different result tonight.
The drama reached fever pitch in the final ten minutes. Melaka looked to have snatched a precious point when Pak Kwang Il ghosted in to equalize in the 85th minute. The silence in Cheras was deafening—but it didn’t last long.
Enter Safawi Rasid. With the clock ticking into “fergie time,” the national star showed his class, ghosting past the defense to fire home the winner.
With this win, KL City sits 2 points clear of Kuching City and 3 points clear of Selangor FC.
