Penang FC came back to take first point of the season after follow to tied Kuala Lumpur City with a score of 2-2 in the Liga Super Malaysia 2023 at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
Josue opened the scoring in the 14th minute when his left footed free kick deflected into the right corner of the Penang goal which goalkeeper Shafiq Afifi Suhaimi failed to save.
More excitingly, Penang FC, who finished bottom of the Super League last season but are still in action this season following the restructuring of the Malaysian League, played with 10 players for the remaining 30 minutes of the match when their player A Namathevan was sent off in the 58th minute after receiving a second yellow card.
The Brazilian then added a second goal in the 71st minute, cleverly meeting substitute Hakimi Azim Rosli’s flicked pass from the right before his effort deflected and confused the visiting keeper to hit the net.
After replacing fellow Brazilian Adriano in the 80th minute, Gomes made the most of the opportunity when he headed home Farish Shah Rosli’s cross from the right and beat home goalkeeper Kevin Mendoza from inside the penalty box.
However, through a counter attack two minutes later, Penang FC narrowed the gap through former Kuala Lumpur player, Hadin Azman who had no difficulty getting past Kevin Mendoza in the home goal thanks to the hard work of imported player Soony Saad from the right.
Then came Gomes who unexpectedly became the savior of the Penang FC from going home empty-handed with an equalizer that disappointed the home fans.
