It was a day of mixed fortunes but ultimate success for the Malaysian contingent at the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025, as several key players battled through the tough Round of 16 to secure their spots in the quarter-finals. The country will be well-represented, especially in the doubles categories.
The men’s and women’s doubles delivered the most consistent results for the Malaysian camp.
Men’s Doubles: Malaysia stormed into the quarter-finals with three pairs advancing.
Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (World No. 4) survived a nail-biting three-game thriller against Japan’s Keiichiro Matsui and Katsuki Tamate, winning 21-23, 21-13, 26-24. Their victory keeps their World Tour Finals qualification hopes alive.
Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King continued their excellent run by defeating Japan’s Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami in straight games (21-11, 21-19).
Choong Hon Jian and Haikal Nazri pulled off an upset by defeating the higher-ranked Taiwanese pair Liu Kuang Heng and Yang Po Han in three games: 14-21, 21-17, 21-19.
The other Malaysian pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, unfortunately, bowed out in straight games to another Japanese duo.
Women’s Doubles: Top seeds Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah were a class apart, dismantling Korea’s Jeong Na Eun and Lee Yeon Woo with a dominant straight-games victory, 21-14, 21-9, securing their quarter-final berth.
The biggest highlight in the singles category was the stunning performance by women’s singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching. The World No. 63 pulled off a massive upset by defeating the highly-ranked World No. 15 Michelle Li of Canada in a hard-fought three-game battle: 21-17, 16-21, 21-19.
This marks a significant breakthrough for the 22-year-old Sarawakian, as it is her first time reaching the quarter-finals of a World Tour Super 500 event and her maiden win against a top-20 ranked player. Wong Ling Ching is the only Malaysian representative remaining in the singles events.
The mixed doubles saw a less positive outcome for Malaysia:
Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin fell to the top-seeded Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in a three-game match (21-14, 12-21, 17-21).
Independent pair Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing were also defeated by Taiwan’s Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan (17-21, 14-21).
Other notable Malaysian exits included men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao (who lost in the first round on Wednesday) and the women’s doubles pair Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting, who were defeated by their Japanese opponents in the Round of 16.
