Syed Yazid Syed Omar, director of Kuala Lumpur United FC Sdn Bhd, the company that manages Kuala Lumpur City, is said to have a debt of approximately RM24 million.
This figure includes operating costs and certain payments for both the Liga Super Malaysia squad and the KL City Extension (U23 squad) since 2021.
Syed Yazid stated that efforts are underway to resolve these financial issues, including the debt burden, to avoid further consequences. He mentioned that certain parties have expressed their willingness to provide financial assistance to help alleviate the debt, including settling player salary arrears.
“There are certain parties who have contacted me and expressed their willingness to provide financial assistance to resolve the debt burden. KL City Management will also restructure debts involving salary arrears and Worker Savings Funds (KWSP), including identifying other debts that need to be resolved immediately. We want to ensure that KL City operates without any problems while other teams under Kuala Lumpur United Sdn Bhd do not face any disturbances. The amount of debt incurred is indeed high, but we are trying to resolve it immediately,” he said.
KL City recently came under scrutiny after reports surfaced of financial difficulties, with their captain, Paulo Josue, claiming he had not received his salary for seven months. Additionally, it was reported that KL City had not paid KWSP contributions since February 2023, amounting to nearly RM719,000.
