Kitchee SC, a club in Hong Kong Premier League have announced the signing of Spanish defensive midfielder Asier Illarramendi from FC Dallas in Major League Soccer, just before the transfer window closed on 31 August.
The 35-year-old veteran is a familiar name to European football fans. Illarramendi played for Real Madrid between 2013 and 2015 and is regarded as a club legend at Real Sociedad, where he had two stints (2008–2013 and 2015–2023) and amassed more than 200 appearances.
The signing marks a significant statement of intent for Kitchee, who have not competed in Asian club competitions for the past two seasons. The club has set a clear target for the 2025/26 campaign – to reclaim their place among Asia’s elite and secure qualification for continental football once again.
Illarramendi’s vast experience in La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and MLS is expected to bring leadership, stability, and quality to Kitchee’s midfield as they push for both domestic dominance and continental return.
